#16 Musings In New Mexico

We had slowed our journey way, way down in NM not only because we had completed our goal of seeing all 48 continental states but because we needed to ‘detox’ from the density of the east coast and the hurry across Texas. In our last blog we showed you the stark beauty of the area around Alamogordo and tried to convey how much we enjoyed the campground at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. We had heard from our buddies, Anita and Margaret, who were on their way across country for a vacation in Florida and decided to catch up with them at Pancho Villa SP near Columbus. We left Oliver Lee CG and drove to Leasburg Dam SP on the Rio Grande River near Las Cruces. The ‘grande’ part of the river is pretty sad as the drought in this area has diminished the river down to something less than a trickle! It was fairly sad to see and made me glad for a moment that dear Bo was not with us as he would have been quite frustrated trying to find a spot in the river to try to get his belly wet! We only stayed for a couple of nights saying hello to the sweet campground hosts, Cheryl and Speedy, having some blood tests done in Las Cruces and taking a few pictures of the architecture and countryside.

Off we dashed to Pancho Villa SP to hang out waiting for Anita and Margaret and their two Corgi dogs – Mikey and Jake; after all we were in need of some puppy love! We had been to this campground a couple of years ago and thought that we really didn’t find it very fun but this time it was a ball. I guess that may have something to do with sharing the adventure with good friends. We had heard about the town of Palomas, Mexico just four miles south of Columbus and how there were so many things that gringos can get just over the border there. Aside from the fairly good and reliable medical and dental care that Americans get are a number of other businesses that we had heard about - premier among them was “The Pink Store.” We had heard how much fun and what great things this store had to offer so we checked it out the day before Margaret & Anita arrived. We could hardly wait to show off this incredible place!

We, of course, helped the local economy and then we took a stroll around town photographing the colors, buildings, churches, parks and people, plus buying bakery goods and some medications. All in all it was a great day.

We stayed below the weather for a few more days, except for some nasty winds and the snow we woke up to on the 10th of February! We watched the flight of doves and the cruising of the owls each day and watched the weather channel waiting for the storms to pass so we could travel westward toward Arizona, California and home!
