Council Grove, KS

We stayed for a week because we wanted to go to the local powwow celebration by the Kansa Indians known as Wah Shun Gah Days, (named after a local Chief). The whole town celebrates for 21/2 days with a parade, car show, carnival, street dance, crafts and food. The Kansa Indians (note: they are the reason it is called Kansas) held their powwow on the edge of town at the Kaw Mission, site of an original Indian Boys School, now a nice museum and park. I loved the celebration, the tradition and dignity of the Indians, the beautifully beaded and feathered ceremonial garb, the drums, Indian tacos, all the kids and all the hugs!

We know this gallery of pictures is huge but we felt compelled to share these people's beauty and ceremony with you. We'll finish Kansas in the next blog.
