Bo's Journal 28 Council Grove, KS Pow Wow

Remember those smart Indian Real Estate Agents? Well, this is where they met to sell the right of way through their lands for the Santa Fe Trail and there is still a stump of the original tree under which the agreement was signed. This town is another treasure. Great buildings, gads of history, a swell lake and State Park up the road.

Council Grove, KS

We stayed for a week because we wanted to go to the local powwow celebration by the Kansa Indians known as Wah Shun Gah Days, (named after a local Chief). The whole town celebrates for 21/2 days with a parade, car show, carnival, street dance, crafts and food. The Kansa Indians (note: they are the reason it is called Kansas) held their powwow on the edge of town at the Kaw Mission, site of an original Indian Boys School, now a nice museum and park. I loved the celebration, the tradition and dignity of the Indians, the beautifully beaded and feathered ceremonial garb, the drums, Indian tacos, all the kids and all the hugs!

We know this gallery of pictures is huge but we felt compelled to share these people's beauty and ceremony with you. We'll finish Kansas in the next blog.
